Meet Your Feb. 10th Musical Guests: Samantha Echo!

A creature of beautiful dark moods and affects, NY native Samantha Echohas been described as “Comic Con’s Kate Bush” (Janna Pelle) “somewhere between dangerous and whimsy” (Jack Murray, Unknown Nobodies) and “one of the smartest, most poetic, exciting, engaging young singers out there today” (Suzanne W. Stout, Playwright in Residence at Theater 80 St Marks).

Biting lyrics, soaring operatic arias, soulful heartaches: She captivated the Rat’s audience in her last appearance and we’re thrilled to have Samantha back.

L’amour du Rat! Our special Pre-Valentine’s Day bill of fare:

URBANE CHARMING AMUSING:
Pianist, comedian, choral singer, mathematician, entertainer David Bell brings a bit of Cole Porter sparkle to the Rat, especially for Valentine’s Day. “In his wicked youth, he studied operatic performance and made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1996, later performing opera through the US, Canada, Europe, and on NPR’s ‘All Things Considered.'” (You can see David regularly in a dazzling musical-theater-improvisation House Team at the PIT Theater!)

SHARP, CONTEMPO AND HILARIOUS:
Selena Coppock created @NYTVows, the parody Twitter and Instagram account satirizing the New York Times Wedding section. You’ve seen Selena in the Amazon Prime sitcom “Red Oaks” and on Bravo, Lifetime, VH1 andCollegeHumor.com. (Oh, and on influential pop-culture podcasts obsessing analyzing Guns N Roses.) Now the Rat presents the comedian The New York Times called an “impressive young talent.”

WORLD DANCE TROUPE:
The Fishnet Follies, a boutique team created specially for the Rat, are members of the acclaimed international Guilty Pleasures Cabaret dance troupe. They bring their Moulin Rouge-style dazzle, costumery, Tap, Frug, “circus” contortion, and acclaimed Light Show to the Rat every month! See why they wowed Feinstein’s/54 Below, the Triad and resorts from Belize to China!

GORGEOUS MUSIC:
From the cafes, clubs and streets (literally!) of NYC and the world comes the beautiful thrilling music and soaringly talented musicians that are the Rat’s signature! Every month, we’ll highlight a different musical form: Roadhouse blues, French chanson, Saloon piano, Beatbox, rock, opera — what will you see and hear THIS month?

MONTHLY ART-ENTERTAINMENT BRILLIANCE:
The Rat’s not complete without the funny, clever, eccentric work of Bill Chambers. A horrifying parody of an Apple tech expo, the tale of Vincenzo the Chain-Smoking Monkey, re-animating a “dead” Teddy Ruxpin a la Mary Shelly — expect the unexpected. Bill is seen in the Frigid Festival, Canuck Cabaret, and the annual East Village Antifolk Festival.

PSEUDO ‘GERMAN’ NIGHTCLUB HUMOR:
Gregor of Berlin (aka Gregory Levine) – suave, sinister, sarcastic, appearing “by contractual obligation,” the Fatherland’s favorite entertainer will regale you with horrid tales of Berlinner childhood, decadence, morphine, prostitution, and of course, show biz. (Seen at Feinstein’s/54 Below, APAP showcases at the Duplex, Capital Fringe, Frigid Festival, Travel Channel and in the Guinness World Records).

HOSTED by Stand Up Comic/Storyteller, Canadian Import Jillian Thomas(MTV Live, The Toronto Show, The Buzz, Listen Missy, & Much Music’s Love Court). Not to mention the annual East Village Oscar Awards Party, and Canada’s longest-running cannabis-cafe comedy-club show!

What a Show! (The Rat Recap)

Rat-Poster-USM-1030-10DollarsWhat a terrific Ten-Foot Rat Cabaret it was! Talking about the Sat. Jan. 13 edition. It started with some bumps but we sailed though smoothly. Thanks so much to our top-notch performers: beautiful rocking LTrain (Gabriel Castellar and Crystalla Gonzalez) – you guys have evolved to an even better level than last time! The same goes for the ever-hysterical Nat Towsen (Nosferatu! Of course! The Max Schreck, not the Klaus Kinski, ja?). And Michael Delisle – so funny. I KNEW I had to book you; and you psychically precognitived it, didn’t you? Bill Chambers, thanks again for our newly-revivified sketch partnership (but I DO wish you’d put the daggers back where you found them). (Thanks also to Dan Ricker for playing the laugh-track board! And Rob for programming the software). And of course, excellence from the Fishnet Follies*,  with a special congrats to Kayla Radomski and Melissa Buriak for their captainship of the dancers.

Thanks to our deft crew: William Glenn, scrambling and juggling and handling sound and light (and a second mention of Dan R for indispensible tech help), Julia Philina for jumping in last-minute as Stage Manager. The lovely Diana Van Decker Byrne in the Bar, and Carter managing the door — in icy temperatures.

Thanks as always to our mistress of ceremonies, Jillian Thomas, hysterical and energizing all the way through!

And of course, my co-producer, Rob Dub: we pulled it off — again!

Special thanks go to Erez Ziv and everyone at Horse Trade Theater Group, for all they do to keep unique entertainments and art like ours alive in NYC. (Plug: HT’s annual FRIGID New York Theater Festival is coming up next month. Go see some original, crazy and often brilliant indie theater at the Frigid!)

BUT the biggest thanks go to you, yes, YOU, the viewing public, you beautiful maniacs, who came out on a freezing Saturday night (25-degree drop in 24 hours!) to watch a great live show. Strangers, old friends, new friends, you packed the house, loved the show and we love you right back!

See you at the next Rat: Sat. Feb. 10, 10:30pm!!! THANK YOU!!!

Saturday Jan. 13, 10:30pm Show Features:

RIP-ROARIN’ ROCK:
Your antidote for January misery: LTrain (aka Gabriel Castellar and Crystalla Gonzalez) tear the roof off with thundering soaring guitar and vocals! (www.LTrainband.com)

CHARACTER COMEDY:
Who the hell is Michael Delisle pretending to be? A deranged contestant on a game-show (gone horribly wrong), a desperate suitor in a Rom-Com (gone horribly wrong), Delisle is one of the funniest character-actor comedians alive. He stars in regular weekly shows at NYC theaters like The Magnet and the PIT, and it’s only a matter of time before he spurns The Rat’s advances!

SMART & FUNNY:
Witty, urbane comedy comes courtesy of NY native Nat Towsen, whose work has appeared on VICE and CollegeHumor. Host and producer of the long-running Nat Towsen’s Downtown Variety Hour, he’s a returning Rat Audience Favorite!

WORLD DANCE TROUPE:
The Fishnet Follies, a boutique team created specially for the Rat, are members of the acclaimed international Guilty Pleasures Cabaret dance troupe. MONTHLY ART-ENTERTAINMENT BRILLIANCE:
The Rat’s not complete without the funny, clever, eccentric work of Bill Chambers. A pitch-perfect parody of an egomaniacal Apple tech expo, the tale of Vincenzo the Chain-Smoking Monkey, re-animating a “dead” Teddy Ruxpin a la Mary Shelly — expect the unexpected.
