Guilty Pleasures frame

Now in its 5th Year, Ten-Foot Rat Cabaret features an inspired, curated monthly roster of thrilling music, smart comedy, amazing dance, clever storytelling, sexy burlesque, art and theatrical vaudeville spectacle. A great show in a legendary East Village venue: a NYC night out like no other!

Saturday Feb. 10, 10:30pm Show Features –

L’amour du Rat! Our special Pre-Valentine’s Day bill of fare:

URBANE CHARMING AMUSING:
Pianist, comedian, choral singer, mathematician, entertainer David Bell brings a bit of Cole Porter sparkle to the Rat, especially for Valentine’s Day. “In his wicked youth, he studied operatic performance and made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1996, later performing opera through the US, Canada, Europe, and on NPR’s ‘All Things Considered.'” (You can see David regularly in a dazzling musical-theater-improvisation House Team at the PIT Theater!)

SHARP, CONTEMPO AND HILARIOUS:
Selena Coppock created @NYTVows, the parody Twitter and Instagram account satirizing the New York Times Wedding section. You’ve seen Selena in the Amazon Prime sitcom “Red Oaks” and on Bravo, Lifetime, VH1 andCollegeHumor.com. (Oh, and on influential pop-culture podcasts obsessing analyzing Guns N Roses.) Now the Rat presents the comedian The New York Times called an “impressive young talent.”

WORLD DANCE TROUPE:
The Fishnet Follies, a boutique team created specially for the Rat, are members of the acclaimed international Guilty Pleasures Cabaret dance troupe. They bring their Moulin Rouge-style dazzle, costumery, Tap, Frug, “circus” contortion, and acclaimed Light Show to the Rat every month! See why they wowed Feinstein’s/54 Below, the Triad and resorts from Belize to China!

GORGEOUS MUSIC:
From the cafes, clubs and streets (literally!) of NYC and the world comes the beautiful thrilling music and soaringly talented musicians that are the Rat’s signature! Every month, we’ll highlight a different musical form: Roadhouse blues, French chanson, Saloon piano, Beatbox, rock, opera — what will you see and hear THIS month?

MONTHLY ART-ENTERTAINMENT BRILLIANCE:
The Rat’s not complete without the funny, clever, eccentric work of Bill Chambers. A horrifying parody of an Apple tech expo, the tale of Vincenzo the Chain-Smoking Monkey, re-animating a “dead” Teddy Ruxpin a la Mary Shelly — expect the unexpected. Bill is seen in the Frigid Festival, Canuck Cabaret, and the annual East Village Antifolk Festival.

PSEUDO ‘GERMAN’ NIGHTCLUB HUMOR:
Gregor of Berlin (aka Gregory Levine) – suave, sinister, sarcastic, appearing “by contractual obligation,” the Fatherland’s favorite entertainer will regale you with horrid tales of Berlinner childhood, decadence, morphine, prostitution, and of course, show biz. (Seen at Feinstein’s/54 Below, APAP showcases at the Duplex, Capital Fringe, Frigid Festival, Travel Channel and in the Guinness World Records).

HOSTED by Stand Up Comic/Storyteller, Canadian Import Jillian Thomas(MTV Live, The Toronto Show, The Buzz, Listen Missy, & Much Music’s Love Court). Not to mention the annual East Village Oscar Awards Party, and Canada’s longest-running cannabis-cafe comedy-club show!

Meet Your Feb. 10th Musical Guests: Samantha Echo!

A creature of beautiful dark moods and affects, NY native Samantha Echohas been described as “Comic Con’s Kate Bush” (Janna Pelle) “somewhere between dangerous and whimsy” (Jack Murray, Unknown Nobodies) and “one of the smartest, most poetic, exciting, engaging young singers out there today” (Suzanne W. Stout, Playwright in Residence at Theater 80 St Marks).

Biting lyrics, soaring operatic arias, soulful heartaches: She captivated the Rat’s audience in her last appearance and we’re thrilled to have Samantha back.

What a Show! (The Rat Recap)

Rat-Poster-USM-1030-10DollarsWhat a terrific Ten-Foot Rat Cabaret it was! Talking about the Sat. Jan. 13 edition. It started with some bumps but we sailed though smoothly. Thanks so much to our top-notch performers: beautiful rocking LTrain (Gabriel Castellar and Crystalla Gonzalez) – you guys have evolved to an even better level than last time! The same goes for the ever-hysterical Nat Towsen (Nosferatu! Of course! The Max Schreck, not the Klaus Kinski, ja?). And Michael Delisle – so funny. I KNEW I had to book you; and you psychically precognitived it, didn’t you? Bill Chambers, thanks again for our newly-revivified sketch partnership (but I DO wish you’d put the daggers back where you found them). (Thanks also to Dan Ricker for playing the laugh-track board! And Rob for programming the software). And of course, excellence from the Fishnet Follies*,  with a special congrats to Kayla Radomski and Melissa Buriak for their captainship of the dancers.

Thanks to our deft crew: William Glenn, scrambling and juggling and handling sound and light (and a second mention of Dan R for indispensible tech help), Julia Philina for jumping in last-minute as Stage Manager. The lovely Diana Van Decker Byrne in the Bar, and Carter managing the door — in icy temperatures.

Thanks as always to our mistress of ceremonies, Jillian Thomas, hysterical and energizing all the way through!

And of course, my co-producer, Rob Dub: we pulled it off — again!

Special thanks go to Erez Ziv and everyone at Horse Trade Theater Group, for all they do to keep unique entertainments and art like ours alive in NYC. (Plug: HT’s annual FRIGID New York Theater Festival is coming up next month. Go see some original, crazy and often brilliant indie theater at the Frigid!)

BUT the biggest thanks go to you, yes, YOU, the viewing public, you beautiful maniacs, who came out on a freezing Saturday night (25-degree drop in 24 hours!) to watch a great live show. Strangers, old friends, new friends, you packed the house, loved the show and we love you right back!

See you at the next Rat: Sat. Feb. 10, 10:30pm!!! THANK YOU!!!

Saturday Jan. 13, 10:30pm Show Features:

RIP-ROARIN’ ROCK:
Your antidote for January misery: LTrain (aka Gabriel Castellar and Crystalla Gonzalez) tear the roof off with thundering soaring guitar and vocals! (www.LTrainband.com)

CHARACTER COMEDY:
Who the hell is Michael Delisle pretending to be? A deranged contestant on a game-show (gone horribly wrong), a desperate suitor in a Rom-Com (gone horribly wrong), Delisle is one of the funniest character-actor comedians alive. He stars in regular weekly shows at NYC theaters like The Magnet and the PIT, and it’s only a matter of time before he spurns The Rat’s advances!

SMART & FUNNY:
Witty, urbane comedy comes courtesy of NY native Nat Towsen, whose work has appeared on VICE and CollegeHumor. Host and producer of the long-running Nat Towsen’s Downtown Variety Hour, he’s a returning Rat Audience Favorite!

WORLD DANCE TROUPE:

Great Show Last Weekend – Best Ever??

FullHouse-Dec2017A GREAT show last night – maybe our best one ever. And we SOLD OUT the house! (On such an icy night, no less!) I’m talking about Ten-Foot Rat Cabaret, which fired on all pistons Saturday night.

Thanks first to our phenomenal performers: musical genius Shayfer James (who was with us in the Rat’s very Debut Show in Sept. 2013), hilarious “SantaCon Bro” Melissa Aquiles, the high-kickin’ dancin’ Fishnet Follies*, who bring the show so hard, smartly horrifyingly hilarious Noam Osband, brilliant pseudo-klutz “Anti-Burlesque” clown Pamela Wess. Each different, each amazing, each gigantically entertaining! (People tell me Gregor of Berlin was in the best form they’ve ever seen “him.” So, fairly delighted with Rudolf der Rotschnauz Reindeer story too.)

Thanks to our incredible crew: William Glenn** in the sound and light booth (and assembling and testing all the equipments), Clay West, on 100 levels the finest stage manager one could imagine — irreplaceable. And Carter O’brien Ford braving the elements working the door.

Hostess-with-mostess Jillian Thomas was in great form! Thank you, lady! Much hearts!

Co-producer Rob Dub: we did it, baby! Those WEREN’T bad omens! Who knew??

Special thanks to Erez Ziv and everyone at Horse Trade Theater Group, for all they do with us and for us, and for all they do keeping great art and unique entertainment alive in NYC. Check out their site and go see a Horse Trade/Frigid NYC (theater festival) show.

But – AND – the biggest thanks go to YOU, the audience, who said fongool to the cruel December elements and came out to see a live show. Your names were Mike and Hassan and Jordon and Chris, Maggie and Trish, and a myriad more, and you were wonderful to perform for and to meet afterward. Thank you!

We’re at Under St Marks the Second Saturday of every month.
SEE YOU ON JAN 13, 10:30PM.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Hot NYC Holiday Edition: The Rat on Sat. Dec. 9!

GraceGotham-Stumblebum-80It’s the 2017 holidays in NYC!

That means Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Milad-un-Nabi, Dhanu Sankranti… and, G_d help you, dinners with your relatives. (Secular humanism won’t ease that existential angst, will it, smart guy?) So come and be entertained: celebrate, see a show and numb yourselves with the Rat!

Now in its 5th Year, Ten-Foot Rat Cabaret features an inspired, curated monthly roster of thrilling music, smart comedy, amazing dance, clever storytelling, sexy burlesque, art and theatrical vaudeville spectacle. A great show in a legendary East Village venue: a night out like no other!

Featuring the Talents of:

MAD CHARACTER COMEDY:
The talented hilarious Melissa Aquiles is on the bill! Her insane interactive show “Hire Me” was chosen for the PIT’s SoloCom Festival, and she can be seen in the upcoming Denied from New York variety show. Who will she be at the Rat??

HOT PROFESSIONAL DANCE:
The Fishnet Follies, a “boutique act” created specially for the Rat, comprise members of the acclaimed international Guilty Pleasures Cabaret dance troupe. They bring their dazzle, costumery, Tap, Frug, “circus” contortion, and acclaimed Light Show to the Rat every month! See why they wowed Feinstein’s/54 Below, the Triad, the Duplex and worldwide resorts from Belize to China!

PHYSICAL THEATRICAL COMEDY:
Pamela Wess – She slew them at the acclaimed Bindelstiff Open Stage (Dixon Place), and she’s the driving force behind “On Women Who Validate Themselves Through Sex” (Official Selection of LA Comedy Festival, Las Vegas Film Festival, and Iron Mule Short Comedy Festival – winner of Audience Award). What will this inspired performer-entertainer-writer-director bring to the Rat??

SMART MUSICAL COMEDY:
Noam Osband – He made Reddit’s front page when he serenaded jammed pedestrians on the Brooklyn Bridge (https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/6062en/how_to_clear_out_the_bike_lane/). From religious bowling to Hitler’s vegetarianism, from his “First Kiss Confessions” true-life web series to “The Ballad of Eva Braun,” Noam brings his experience as a documentary filmmaker, educator and anthropologist to his comedy, and his rambunctious brilliance is nothing short of hysterical.

DARK ‘GERMAN’ XMAS PARODY:
Gregor of Berlin (Gregory Levine) – appearing “by contractual obligation,” he’ll regale you with horrid tales of Teutonic childhood, decadence, morphine, prostitution, and of course, show biz. (Seen in The Duplex, Feinstein’s/54 Below, the Capital Fringe, Frigid Festival, Travel Channel and in the Guinness World Records).

GORGEOUS MUSIC:
(It’s a Surprise!)

…and MORE!

What a Show It Was! (Nov. 11, 2017)

Rat-BalloonSignThe Ten-Foot Rat Cabaret SWUNG this Saturday, baby! After negotiating some tricky twists (i.e., previous users of the theater Under St Marks, who loitered on stage, were obliviously uncooperative when their show was done and the Rat’s load-in time began, and left a tech mess for us to straighten out, thus causing a later start), we pulled off a terrific show. And this with Yours Truly flying solo, both as producer and host!

Thanks first to our performers: Julie Lauren Stevens Kosnik (your singing STUNNED people, darlin’!), Boris Khaykin (funny as hell, and what a way to pick up and play with what came before), Bill Chambers as “Henry Rollins” (reading excerpts from his children’s book!!) had people laughing so hard tears ran — tears!. The 29th Street Revue was bizarrely funny creating their live-time musical theater. The Fishnet Follies* (Andrea Elizabeth PaleshKatarina LottAshley Rose) danced and slew like stilettos! And I’m told I was both funny and pro-smooth hosting as Rocco the WitSec Entertainer.

Thanks next to our own diligent Rat crew and Horse Trade Theater Group staff: William Glenn in the sound/light booth, rolling with plenty of punches on a very tight timeframe. Stage Manager-par-excellence Clay West, always cool-headed and multi-tasking for real — you’re the best. Helen Blash slaking thirsts in the bar, and Carter at the door — and voluntarily doing double-duty helping with tech. Thanks!

Thanks to Lucia Mueller for filming it! Can’t wait to see the record!

Thanks to Erez Ziv and everyone at Horse Trade Theater Group / Frigid NY, who have the Rat’s back, and who do more than you’ll ever know to keep independent art, performing arts and theater alive in NYC! Go see a show at HT’s theaters: UNDER St. Mark’s Theatre and Kraine Theater.

And as always: Thanks most of all to YOUSE GUYS: all of you who came out to see, hear, applaud and enjoy and be a part of Live Nightlife Arts and Entertainment! We couldn’t do it without you. Grazie e buona sera!

See you next month on Sat. Dec. 9, 10:30pm, when Jillian Thomas returns as host!

*(Follies cast members rotate monthly. See them as part of Guilty Pleasures Cabaret twice monthly.)

Now in its 5th year, the Ten-Foot Rat Cabaret offers an inspired, curated monthly roster of thrilling music, smart comedy, amazing dance, clever storytelling, art and theater. A slice of NYC nightlife in a classic East Village venue. A night out like no other.
