Dec. 8 Performer Highlight: SisterMonk
Led by frontwoman Kathy Deane on the African djembe drums and soaring, fiery vocals, SisterMonk creates:
“slinky, undulating, wickedly danceable punk-infused funk and Middle Eastern-inspired jams. There’s no band in New York anything like them.” (New York Music Daily)
Raised by Irish immigrant parents in NYC, Kathy’s first musical influence was traditional Irish folk songs. She has taken voice training with Erene Mastrangelli (NYC) and Cathleen Wilder (Seattle), and briefly studied with Senegalese Master Drummer Thione Diop.
Guitarist Jody Rubel studied cultural anthrolopology and created his own “progressive, cultural experiment through songwriting and performance. Jody draws musical and lyrical inspiration from “the music of Bahia Brazil, William Blake, yoga, dialectics and world religion.”
Tani Tilsner provides keyboard melodies and supporting vocals, also assisting on compositions. A “creative spirit in all aspects of her life,” Tani also “paints, writes, sculpts, and models.”
Newest band member Ina Cabrera “grew up playing piano but wasn’t really digging it. …As a little girl she was attuned to bass frequencies and cranked up the low end to max.”
SisterMonk thrilled crowds at shows including The Lincoln Center Summer Music in The Park series and Yasgur’s Farm Woodstock Reunion. We’ve also enjoyed their glory at various NYC venues including The Bowery Electric, Mercury Lounge, and Rockwood Music Hall – and actually enjoyed being in Penn Station(!) when we saw them play underground as members of the NYC MTA’s Music Under New York program.
For the first time since 2016, please welcome back SisterMonk to the Ten-Foot Rat Cabaret!

So… Who Else Is Performing on Saturday Dec. 8?
Deconstructing strip clubs, a musical tragedy set in Chipotle, teaching an insane self-defense class on TV: Alison Wien, Dani Elizabeth Letsche, and Case Watson are collectively the sketch-comedy team “Thank You For Your Cervix.” TYFYC dominated the annual 2018 NYC SketchFest with their sharp-edged, clever writing and bold characterization. They’re theatre-trained, improv-trained and…
“Guess how many of us have daddy issues!” (They said it, the Rat didn’t.)
BEAUTIFUL BRASSY BROADWAY BELTER:
Founding member of long-running legendary musical-comedy ensemble VERN, welcome back Rat audience favorite Julie A Feltman! A NYC theater veteran, company member of NY’s Emerging Artists Theater, and resident House Team performer at venues including the PIT Comedy Theater, Julie is funny, fast, and the lady has PIPES!
PHYSICAL THEATRE COMEDY:
Pamela Wess slew them at the acclaimed Bindelstiff Open Stage (Dixon Place), starred in cult fave “Clown Porn” and is the driving force behind the comedy “On Women Who Validate Themselves Through Sex” (Official Selection: LA Comedy Festival and Las Vegas Film Festival). Her alter-ego Madame Bouge (SEE PHOTO) is kinda weird, kinda hot, kinda… murderous? You decide — but you’ll agree she is very gifted and very funny!
The Rat would not be complete without our Artist-in-Residence: the funny, brilliant, and strange Bill Chambers. He brought us Henry Rollins’ Children’s Book Read-a-long (yes, there’s violence and nihilism), David Lee Roth’s TherapySessions, Neil Diamond’s True Crime Confessions – and Vincenzo the Chain-Smoking Monkey. Expect the unexpected from this hilarious performance-art polymath. He’s seen in the Gotham Storytelling Festival, Canuck Cabaret, and the annual cult favorite Lower East Side Anti-Folk Festival.
HIGH-KICKING WORLD DANCE TROUPE:
Moulin Rouge-style dazzle, costumery, Tap, Frug, acrobatic “circus” contortion, and Light Show — that’s the acclaimed international Guilty Pleasures Cabaret dance company! See why they’ve wowed crowds at Feinstein’s/54 Below, the Duplex, the Cutting Room and worldwide resorts from Dubai to Belize to China! (SEE PHOTO)
CLASSIC GERMAN XMAS FOLK TALE… SORT OF
Dark “German” nightclub humor as suave, sinister, witty and sarcastic criminal Gregor of Berlin (aka Gregory Levine) regales us with the “traditional Black Forest folk tale of ‘Rudolf Rotschnauz’ (Rednose).” There is Schadenfreude and revenge! Gregory/Gregor has been seen in the Capital Fringe, Frigid Festival, Travel Channel, The Duplex, the PIT Comedy Theater and Guinness Book of World Records.
HOSTED by emcee extraordinaire, comedian/storyteller and Canadian Import Jillian Thomas (MTV Live, The Buzz, The Toronto Show, Listen Missy and Much Music’s Love Court). Not to mention the annual East Village Oscar Awards Party, and Canada’s longest-running cannabis-cafe comedy-club show!
Produced by Rob Dub and Gregory Levine
